5 Marks: Empowerment for Mission

The primary purpose of the Holy Spirit in our lives is empowerment for mission. God gives believers the Holy Spirit so that we can accomplish His work. In Acts 1:8, Jesus told his disciples, “you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses….” We need the power of the Holy Spirit to be witnesses for Jesus to those around us.

Zechariah 4:6 is a familiar Old Testament passage that says, “Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit….” God has always used His Spirit to complete His work. The Spirit’s empowerment for mission has always been a requirement for completing the tasks that God has assigned His people.

When the Holy Spirit is at work, change is taking place. The Holy Spirit changes the way that we pray. He also changes our priorities – what we put first. When the Spirit is at work in our lives, He changes how we use God’s resources – time, talents, and money – redirecting them from selfish ends to Kingdom work. The Spirit also changes how we build relationships, especially with those who do not know Jesus. When we start to see these changes in our lives, we know that the Holy Spirit is empowering us for Kingdom work, preparing us to take on the mission of God.
