5 Marks: God Is Worthy

The fifth mark of our series, 5 Marks of a Healthy Disciple, is this: A disciple stewards God’s assets for the advancement of the kingdom. When God’s people truly believe that He is worthy, motivating them to give becomes a non-issue. 1 Chronicles 29 tells the story of the preparations that David made for his son, Solomon, to build a temple for God. Not only did David give abundantly, but the leaders and people of Israel followed his lead and gave generously to the construction plans.

There are ten things that Scripture teaches us about giving when we believe that God is worthy. People who believe God is worthy:

  1. Give more than they are asked to give. (Exodus 36:1-7)
  2. Give in response to a great cause. (2 Corinthians 8-9)
  3. Give out of their substance, whether large or small. (Luke 21:1-4)
  4. Give more than just their money. (Luke 10:25-37)
  5. Give even when it doesn’t make sense. (Genesis 45)
  6. Give to help others, even when they differ from one another. (Luke 7:1-10)
  7. Give to see the impossible become reality. (Matthew 14:14-21)
  8. Give as a byproduct of their own personal transformation. (Luke 19)
  9. Give out of their own poverty. (Luke 21:1-4)
  10. Give when others do not. (Philippians 4:15-16)
