5 Marks: Spiritual Gifts
The first thing that we have to realize about spiritual gifts is that they are not about me. They are not for my benefit, though I certainly benefit from using them. The Holy Spirit gives us gifts in order to bless others. In 1 Peter 4:10, the apostle Peter wrote, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” We are called to use our spiritual gifts to serve others to the glory of Jesus Christ. A spiritual gift is the one gift that is truly meant to keep on giving.
There are two primary passages of Scripture in which we find spiritual gifts specifically named: Romans 12 and 1 Corinthians 12.

Spiritual gifts are not talents. Talents are natural abilities. While we may consider these God-given abilities, they are not the same as the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which are an empowerment of supernatural origin. Every believer has at least one gift, but no believer has all of the gifts. Even so, all of the gifts are given by the same Spirit.
