5 Marks: Using Your Gifts Every Day
The Holy Spirit has given you spiritual gifts so that you can be a blessing to others, and he wants you to be using your gifts every day. When it comes to the gifts of the Spirit, this is the bottom line. 1 Corinthians 12:7 says, “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.” Or as 1 Peter 4:10 says, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”
The first step in using your gifts every day is an obvious one: Know your gift. There are so many spiritual gifts, but how can you know which one God has given you? The best way to find out what your spiritual gift is through the affirmation of others. You can take a spiritual gifts test, or you can look at your natural talents, but the surest sign that you have a spiritual gift is when others in the church, especially spiritual leaders, affirm it.
After you know your gift, it is important to steward it. No one is a natural expert in the use of their spiritual gifts. Instead, you have to apply yourself to learning about your gift. The kingdom of God is the kind of place where you’re expected to steward and multiply anything that you’ve been given.
The final step in using your gifts every day is to pray for daily opportunities to put your gift into practice. Look for those moments when the Spirit can move through you to build up other people. God wants you to put your spiritual gifts into practice every day, and if you ask him, he will give you those opportunities.
