The Heart of the Matter: Final Judgment
This message from Pastor Andy covers 1 John 2:28-3:10. In this section of John’s letter, the apostle has final judgment in the back of his mind as he continues to correct the false teaching that has infected his church. Final judgment is coming, and there is no getting out of it. When that moment comes, you will either respond with fear, dread, and shame, or you will be filled with confidence and be totally unashamed. Because of what Jesus has done for us, we can be confident and unashamed when final judgment comes.
John gives us answers to the most important questions in life: Who am I? Where do I belong? Does God love me? In Christ, we are children of God. We belong in God’s family. God loves us more than we can ever understand. We are safe in the love of God because his love never changes or fails.
What Jesus gives us, when he comes into our lives, is his way of life, which is the way of self-sacrificing love. When John talks about “continuing in him” or “living in him,” he’s talking about obedience to that way of life. Jesus never leads us into sin. Sin is not a part of his way of life, so we can not allow it to be a part of our way of life. It’s one thing to fall into temptation and sin; it’s something else entirely to go on sinning and call it the way of Jesus.
