The Heart of the Matter: Great Faith
We conclude our series on 1 John, The Heart of the Matter, with this message on having great faith, taken from 1 John 5. It is our faith that makes us an overcomer of the world, so it must be important that we have great faith. Hebrews 11:6 says, “without faith it is impossible to please God.” Faith is essential to the Christian life.
But what is faith? Hebrews 11:1 says, “faith is confidence in what we hope for, and assurance about what we don’t see.” The greatest enemy to our faith is contentment with the world. If we’re satisfied with the way things are, then we won’t long for God to make things right. But faith is the conviction that God is always at work.
How do I get great faith? It begins when you decide to place your trust in Jesus Christ. Faith comes from observing the obvious: God exists, the world is broken, but he has sent his Son to forgive your sins. Faith comes through both pleasant and difficult circumstances. Hard times can purify our faith if we trust that, no matter what, God is with us, and he is working to redeem every situation. We learn great faith by keeping our eyes firmly fixed on Jesus.
