The Heart of the Matter: Overcome the world
What you believe about Jesus determines who you are and what you become as a person. God wants us to overcome the world and the sin that ties us down, and so he sent Jesus to set us free. In this message, we cover 1 John 5:1-12, which describes four things that are true for every believer.
First, we are grafted into God’s family. Once you put your hope and trust in Jesus Christ, you are, as John would say, “born of God.” You become God’s child when you trust Christ. Second, we fall in love with others who believe in Jesus. It’s not just that we now have a new family, we actually fall in love with that new family. Third, we obey God’s commands, which are not burdensome. John gives us a way to gauge our love for the Father: We do what he says. John makes it clear when he writes, “this is love for God: to keep his commands.” Fourth, we are world overcomers. As God’s children, we overcome the world. This doesn’t mean that we won’t have problems in this life once we give ourselves to Jesus. Instead, it means that we will overcome the world system that seeks to keep people in bondage to sin and death.
