The Heart of the Matter: The Truth
In 1 John 4:1-6, John writes about false prophets, false teachings, and false spirits. The world is filled with teaching that sounds true, but is far from it. There are many spirits in the world, but not all of them are from God. How can we know the difference? How can we discern the truth from falsehood?
In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” John taught his church to discern between true and false spirits like this: “Every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God.” Jesus is the truth, and he is the whole truth! When it comes to the things of God, any teaching that is not wholly true is untrue. Any teacher or spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God.
God works in black and white. Spirits from God say that Jesus came in the flesh, but evil spirits do not. God never muddies the water or compromise; we’re the ones who do that. God also provides a false teaching detection system: the Holy Spirit within us. The Spirit’s job is to lead us into all truth. He teaches us the things of Jesus, and gives us the discernment to judge between true and false teaching.
