How to Family: Marriage
“First comes love, then comes marriage…” That’s how the old nursery rhyme tells it, anyhow. The second message in our How to Family series deals with the important issue of marriage. Piggybacking off of his message on dating, Pastor Andy walked us through Ephesians 5:22-33, one of the most significant biblical texts on marital relationships.
What is marriage? This is one of the biggest questions that our culture is currently asking. Is it an antiquated social construct? Is it the foundation of society? As we look across the whole arc of Scripture, we find this definition: Marriage is a consummated covenant between a man and a woman for the purpose of fulfilling God’s original command to govern and fill the earth, and to serve as a living metaphor of the eternal relationship between Christ and the Church.
Our marriages are meant to be living metaphors of the eternal marriage of Christ and the Church. The story of Scripture ends with a wedding. Each of us are invited to come to the wedding – but not merely as guests. Every human being is invited to come to the wedding of Christ and the Church as a member of the Church – as part of Christ’s bride.
