I Will Build My Church: Ephesus
Ephesus was one of the most important cities in the Roman Empire, and the church that developed there played a significant role in the early spread of the Gospel. We find the story of the church in Ephesus in Acts 18-20. It began when Paul, Priscilla, and Aquila arrived there from Corinth. Paul didn’t stay long, but Priscilla and Aquila remained in the city and started building a church there.
One of the most important members of the church in Ephesus was a young hot shot preacher named Apollos. He was a gifted speaker, but when he arrived in Ephesus he was very green. He hadn’t yet learned the full way of Jesus. Priscilla and Aquila saw a lot of promise in him, and took him under their wings. After learning the ways of the faith, Apollos was commissioned to go to the church in Corinth to strengthen the believers there. God rewarded the generosity of the Ephesian church by bringing Paul back to them.
Paul spent three years ministering in Ephesus, but when he first arrived he encountered a group of disciples who, like Apollos, didn’t know the fullness of what God had for them. They hadn’t even heard of the Holy Spirit! There are a lot of believers like this today: those who lack a full understanding of the Gospel and the presence of the Holy Spirit in their lives. God has so much more for us! Perhaps you are in this group. One way to find out is to ask yourself three diagnostic questions about your faith:
- Do I know what the Gospel is and can I articulate it to others?
- Do I experience divine power over sin?
- Is my soul buoyed by hope?
If you’re in this group, it’s time to enter into the fullness of what God has for you. The pastors at Hope Church would love to talk with you about your next step. Please feel free to contact Pastor Yogi or Pastor Andy.
