Marriage in the Way of Jesus
After finishing the All In series with our Annual Meeting and Small Groups launch, we returned to the series Hope Is Here and the book of 1 Peter. When we pressed the pause button on this series for Advent, we had just finished chapter 2, so Pastor Andy picked up in 1 Peter 3:1-7 with this message, Marriage in the Way of Jesus.
This passage, which contains the command to wives to “submit to your own husbands,” is a difficult one for our culture to hear. It has been misused and abused in a way that is unfaithful to Christianity, and so we come to it with a lot of baggage. But Peter’s instructions to husbands and wives is an important word on marriage for us to understand and faithfully walk out in our lives.
Using the story of a fictional, first-century couple named Decius and Phoebe, Andy helps us to understand the historical context of this passage, and the radical calling God issues to men and women for marriage. What we often fail to understand about what this passage teaches is that submission assumes equality. Submission – the confluence of humility, obedience, and endurance – is a gift, freely given by the wife to her husband. The husband’s responsibility, then, is to be considerate and respectful to his wife.
This is a rich and vital text for our day. After listening to this message, consider sharing it with others who may benefit from it.
