Prophets of the Cross: Jonah
Every once in a while you come across a story in the Bible that seems really difficult to believe. The book of Jonah, or maybe just the part of him being swallowed by a huge fish, is one of those stories. It’s a story that is familiar to many of us, but some are asking the question: Can we really take this story seriously? Well, Jesus took it seriously. He said the story of Jonah in the whale was a sign of the death and resurrection of the Messiah.
In fact, Jonah still speaks from the belly of the fish. We learn from him and his story that God answers our prayers to make us merciful, just like He is. When God called the prophet to preach to the people of Nineveh, Jonah initially refused, because he hated those people and didn’t want God to be merciful to them. But God’s plan was to offer them mercy, which is exactly what He did when they repented. God wants all people to be saved, and giving wicked people the opportunity of salvation is God’s way. All of us are wicked, just like the Ninevites, but God has shown that the cross of Jesus is how far He is willing to go to save us.
