Ed Mangham, Superintendent of the Ohio Valley District of the C&MA, visited Hope Church to preach on radical thanksgiving from Philippians 4:4-9. Like the foundation that supports the whole house, gratitude is one of the footers that keeps our lives firmly supported in Christ. There are four levels of gratitude:
Level 1 – Being thankful for the blessings we receive.
Level 2 – Having an attitude of gratitude.
Level 3 – Being thankful for God’s wisdom, strength, and provision in the midst of trials.
Level 4 – Trusting in God’s sovereignty so much that we are thankful for the trials themselves.
The Bible tells us that our gentle patience in the midst of trials will be a witness to the world. In the same way, other believers will be encouraged and emboldened in their faith when they see our radical thanksgiving. The peace of God is what keeps our hearts from anxiety, fear, and ingratitude, allowing us to be thankful to God no matter the circumstances of our lives. When we trust in God, gratitude will flow out from our hearts and be both an encouragement to our brothers and sisters in Christ, as well as a testimony to the power and goodness of God to the unbelieving world.
