Hope Church has a motto, or tagline, that goes like this: Love God | Love Others | Share Hope. To love God is the first, and greatest, commandment: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.” To love others is the second greatest commandment, which Jesus always appended to the first: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” To share hope is the Great Commission, which Jesus gave his disciples before he ascended back to heaven.
In this message, Pastor Andy concludes this short series by talking about what it means to have resurrection, and how we can share hope with the world. The first step in sharing hope is knowing and possessing it. We can’t give away what we don’t own, and each of us is responsible for knowing what resurrection hope is, and owning it within the depths of our souls. Drawing on several passages from the New Testament, we see that our hope is this: Christian hope is the biblical promise of resurrection into imperishable bodies as members of God’s redeemed people ruling over God’s renewed creation alongside of Jesus.
The second step in sharing hope is always being prepared to give it away. In the earliest days of the church, people were drawn to the eternal hope that Christians displayed, even in the face of suffering and persecution. People today are not as burdened by guilt over their sinfulness as they have for the past thousand years, but they are chasing false hopes. Only resurrection hope has the power to sustain us through the darkest seasons of suffering and pain in this life. People need resurrection hope every bit as much as they need crucifixion forgiveness. It’s our responsibility, as God’s people, to share hope with the world as a necessary component of the Gospel – that Jesus died for our sins and rose again.
