Day 96 of 100 Days with Jesus – Matthew 19:16-30

The passage for today is Matthew 19:16-30. You can read this passage online or on your phone by following along with The Essential Jesus reading plan on, or you can read it in your physical Bible. Take a few minutes to read Matthew 19:16-30 carefully, inviting the Holy Spirit to speak to you as you read.

What did you see in the text? What is the main point being communicated? Here are some of the things that I saw.

Some lyrics to a favorite song of mine read, “There’s a power in poverty that breaks principalities and brings the authorities down to their knees. There’s a brewing frustration in the ageless temptation that fights for control of our soul manipulation. But the God of the kingdoms and God of the nations, the God of creation sends this revelation: through the homeless and penniless Jesus the Son, the poor will inherit the Kingdom to come.” I find this teaching profound! When we become poor (or emptied out) of the things that have a hold on us, the power of God fills us and the enemy can’t do anything about it and is rendered powerless. The rich young man had a portion of his heart in his material possessions and sadly couldn’t let go of what he had in order to follow Jesus. Judging by the reaction of the disciples, the rich people in that time must have been looked up to as the ones who were the “holiest” or the ones who were the most pleasing to God because of all the abundance God lavished on them. What a shock when they heard Jesus say how hard it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven, because they asked, “Then who can be saved?” In other words, if the best of us cannot enter, then who can? The disciples were truly astonished at what Jesus spoke! They saw the impossibility of is all and honestly were asking Him, who has any hope to enter the kingdom of God?  Jesus’ answer signifies what is to be accomplished on the cross, “with man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible!” Amen. All things that have a hold on our spirits and hearts can be broken away through the power of the cross with the gift of the Holy Spirit. What is impossible for us to do in our own strength, God made possible through the Holy Spirit who lives within us!

There are things that can have a hold on our lives just like the rich young man. It may be wealth, or influence, success, reputation, or maybe something else. It may seem impossible for those things to lose their grips on our lives let alone willingly give them up! It may seem impossible like it was for this rich young man who walked away from the Lord sadly. But what is impossible with man, God made possible through the cross. Because Jesus died and rose again defeating sin and death, we have now been clothed with power from on high! Every victory is ours in Christ Jesus, not because we have the ability, but because God is able! We have a great High Priest in Christ Jesus who ever lives to make intercession for us. How greatly do you think God will answer the prayers Jesus makes for us and on our behalf?!

Oh God, it is all about what You accomplished on the cross. We no longer have to be the rich young man who walks sadly away to be imprisoned to his own lusts! We can be set free by the blood of Jesus! Oh God, help us to believe what You have said, and in what You have promised. May Your church rise up in glory as You deliver us from the things that entrap us! May the victory and the glory be Yours! Amen.
